For every student who needs to take the TOEFL to gain admission to the college or university of their choice, preparation is the key to getting a good score. However, if you don’t have access to a formal TOEFL class, the preparation process can be a long and lonely one. Whatever the case, you need to have plenty of TOEFL exercises to do, and this article will explain where you can get as much practice as possible in for the exam.

Fortunately, there are things you can do to make things less difficult. As long as you have access to a computer and the internet, you can find plenty of TOEFL exercises to help you get ready.

TOEFL Practice Exams

Arguably the single most important thing you can do to get ready to take the TOEFL is to get your hands on some practice tests, as this is where you will find the most authentic TOEFL exercises you need. These days, most students take the IBT – the internet-based test. For that reason, it’s important to find timed practice tests that you can take online. They provide the closest approximation of what you can expect on the day of the test.

You can find practice tests – and consequently authentic TOEFL exercises – on the official ETS website. They offer one free practice test, and if you sign up for their online prep course you can get additional tests. Many of their TOEFL preparation books also include CDs with practice tests on them. To access a free version of the ETS TOEFL course, signup for their course on Edx.org.

Another good resource for practice tests is Magoosh. They offer a shortened version of the test for free, and full-length tests if you enroll in their classes.

Sample Questions and Exercises

Before you start taking timed practice exams, you may want to get in some practice with sample questions in a more casual way. The benefit of looking at individual questions is that it can help you understand the format of the test and familiarize yourself with what to expect.

In addition to the two sites already mentioned, you can find a wide variety of TOEFL exercises on two other websites:

Learn4Good

TestDen

Both sites offer insight into English grammar, as well as an array of sample questions and grammar exercises to help improve your grasp of the English language and prepare for the exam.

Other Exercises and Practice Ideas

True English fluency is only achievable with practice. While formal exercises and preparations are a must, there’s no reason that you can’t also have a bit of fun as you prepare for the test. Here are a few ideas that may inspire you:

  • Take a short story or poem in your native language and translate it into English – or switch things around and translate from English into your native tongue. Either way, you’ll be improving your knowledge of English and getting a firm grip on English sentence structure.
  • Watching YouTube videos has become a great part of our everyday life. No matter how busy we are, we all spend some time on YouTube watching our favorite youtubers. Subscribe to an English youtuber that makes videos of subject matters that are beneficial and of interest to you. Although you have the freedom to choose what videos to watch, try to keep it as academic as possible, because academic videos will challenge you more with a wider range of vocabulary that will be helpful to you during the Exam. Remember that the TOEFL is an academic exam.
  • Practice making transcriptions of English language videos on YouTube. Even for native speakers, transcribing videos can be a challenge. The process of writing down what each speaker is saying will force you to pay close attention and hone in on words that are difficult for you to understand.

The key with TOEFL test preparation is to expose yourself to as much English as you possibly can, both in written and spoken form. Training yourself to understand English, and honing your general comprehension skills, will do more to help you prepare than almost anything else. If you do that, you’ll be ready to earn a high score when you sit down to take the exam.
