Official ETS Guidebook

December 29, 2016 by Educational Testing ServiceReviews :

An essential work by ETS, the actual makers of the TOEFL test.

Who better to write an official guide than ETS?

With actual tests to try, it is the most authentic guide to help you know what and what not to expect on the actual exam with hundreds of real TOEFL questions for you to practice with.

It also helps you integrate the speaking, listening and writing skills, providing you with many necessary strategies to use when approaching the exam.

It comes as a book and CD-ROM.

This is a must-have for any serious TOEFL iBT student. Make sure you start with this book!

Complete Guide to the TOEFL Test

December 29, 2016 by Bruce Rogers Reviews :

The Complete Guide to the TOEFL Test was written by Bruce Rogers and published by Thomson.

Although it is generally a good book, it has less full length tests, and is overly expensive.

Your money would be better used if you were to buy, for example, two (or perhaps more) of the previously recommended books above.

Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test

December 29, 2016 by Jolene Gear (Author), Robert Gear (Author)Reviews :

Cambridge Preparation for the TOEFL Test was prepared by Jolene and Robert Gear.

Although it is a satisfactory book, you would think that something with Cambridge’s name would be outstanding.

Unfortunately, you should pass on purchasing this book – at least for now – as too many students have had difficulty gaining access to the online portion of the book.

We recommend purchasing other preparation books that we’ve listed above.

Longman Preparation

December 29, 2016 by Deborah PhillipsReviews :

The Longman Preparation Course in its latest edition is a slightly improved program which provides learners with three full-length tests.

It combines between having written script and online resources to provide students with a fair amount of practice and test writing tips.

Simply put, there are other preparation books you should start with.

Use this one as a third or fourth choice.

Barron’s TOEFL iBT

December 29, 2016 by Pamela Sharpe Ph.D.Reviews :

This book has been compiled by an English language expert by the name of Dr. Pamela Sharpe.

Although it provides excellent advice related to learning the English language in general as well as lots of practice questions (there are 7 practice tests in all), there are too many technical problems related to this book to be given high recommendation.

Of primary concern is whether or not you will receive all the necessary CDs to complement the tests.

Although there is plenty of advice in the book related to improving English language proficiency in general, there are other books that provide more specific TOEFL iBT test writing skills.

Kaplan TOEFL iBT

December 29, 2016 by Kaplan (Author)Reviews :

The Kaplan TOEFL iBT preparation book is a pretty good (but not great) resource for more advanced learners to benefit from.

Many of these preparation books just don’t seem to be able to get all the technical issues in order such that the user walks away completely satisfied.

With 4 full-length online practice tests and 450 practice questions, students will get a fair amount of practice in, even if isn’t as much as some of the other books.

Make sure to use this book with the Official ETS Guidebook mentioned above.

Cracking the TOEFL iBT – Princeton

December 29, 2016 by Princeton Review (Author)Reviews :

The Princeton Review’s Cracking the TOEFL iBT is an excellent addition to the Official ETS Guide, with the caveat that it only has one simulated test.

It also contains 39 additional practice drills for the Speaking, Listening, Reading, and Writing sections.

It contains many helpful strategies, including how to guess rationally when faced with the situation of not knowing the correct answer.

Although helpful as an add-on, we do not recommend you buy this book alone without the Official ETS Guidebook mentioned above.

Delta’s Key to the TOEFL iBT

December 29, 2016 by Nancy Gallagher (Author), Patricia Brenner (Editor)Reviews :

Delta’s Key to the TOEFL iBT is an excellent guidebook that comprehensively prepares students for the TOEFL exam.

However, keep in mind that it is structured for high intermediate and advanced learners of English, so before purchasing this book, make sure you’re in this targeted level.

With four full length tests and 1,200 questions to give you plenty of practice, Delta’s Key to the TOEFL iBT is highly recommended.

This book should be used in conjunction with other general preparation books such as the Official ETS Guidebook.
