Compass tests (building, developing, mastering)

December 30, 2016 by Adam Worcester (Author), Lark Bowerman (Author), Casey Malarcher (Editor)

Building Skills for the TOEFL iBT is a good book for students wishing to develop their listening skills for the TOEFL exam. The three-part series is split into three parts, namely: building skills, developing skills and mastering skills. As you can imagine, this means being at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of mastering the skills needed for the listening component of the exam.

There are plenty of effective practice exercises in these books to warrant purchasing them.

It also touches on some of the strategies required for the listening section, as well as providing exercises to help with your comprehension of the listening passages.

Kallis TOEFL Listening

December 30, 2016 by KALLIS (Author)

KALLIS’ TOEFL iBT Pattern Series walks you through the process of acquiring the skills you’ll need for the listening component of the TOEFL exam.

The books are nicely divided into two main sections. For example, Final Prep 3 – the most advanced of the three books – covers the theory and strategies needed to do well on the exam, while the second chapter follows all of that up with a full chapter of actual practice of what’s been covered in the first chapter.

This book is definitely worth purchasing.

PraxisGroup International Language Academic Series

PraxisGroup’s TOEFL Master’s Guide to a Perfect Score: Listening Section will certainly help you improve the skills necessary for doing well on the listening component of the exam.

The book helps students distinguish between what they should be listening to carefully and what they shouldn’t concern themselves with. From this, it also helps you take notes when you should be taking notes.

There are other things that the book concentrates on, but its answer-elimination techniques and note taking strategies alone make the book worth buying.

Longman Preparation Listening

December 30, 2016 by Deborah Phillips

Similar to the Longman reading preparation book, we would not advise this to be your first choice.

Yes, it can be purchased as a secondary source, but it’s unnecessarily expensive due to the fact that you have to pay – and pay handsomely, too – for the audio CD.

We find that this is totally unnecessary, and that there are other equally viable options available that include the audio CD.
