Nova’s

December 30, 2016 by Bruce Stirling (Author)

Nova’s Speaking and Writing Strategies for the TOEFL iBT is a unique book that focuses on three main issues that students find very challenging: argument development, argument mapping, and scoring strategies.

The book begins by teaching you the basics of constructing and developing arguments for the speaking and writing sections of the exam. The main strategy you will be taught in this book is called argument mapping; an innovative step-by-step approach to increasing your score. You’ll also be taught additional techniques on increasing your score by limiting common errors and revising your response effectively. This book does an amazing job at presenting the strategies in a graphic based form, making it easier to understand and apply.

Kallis

The KALLIS’ iBT TOEFL Pattern Writing series is excellent for students that need a lot of help with their writing. This series starts at a beginner’s stage, and walks you through the process of becoming an advanced level student in this particular skill.

The first book focuses a lot on grammar, since grammar is the basic foundation for structuring and writing sentences correctly. The second book discusses the core concepts of how to construct a good answer in the writing sections of the exam. The third book wraps up all the concepts taught in the first and second book while concentrating more on answering the two writing questions (independent and integrated) of the exam.

The skills and strategies taught in the 3 books are simplified into a series of simple steps. Each lesson is followed by a set of exercises to ensure students have understood and practiced the concepts so they can be correctly implemented at the time of writing the exam.

Collins

Collins’ Skills for the TOEFL iBT Test is generally a good book that offers plenty of practice tests and exam writing strategies. For students who need additional practice and help in the writing section of the test, this is a good book to consider. However, we don’t recommend that you use this book as your main preparation resource.

Petersons’ Master TOEFL Writing Skills mainly focuses on improving your writing skills by teaching you key grammar concepts. This book is recommended for beginners or intermediate students who need to focus on learning the basic grammar rules for TOEFL. However, students that already understand these core grammar rules might want to consider choosing another book that focuses more on other aspects of writing.

Longman

Longman’s Preparation Course for the TOEFL Test: iBT Writing provides students with a great deal of practice as well as helpful explanations to benefit from. It also gives students wise advice regarding the two questions on the writing portion of the section.

Longman is known for including a lot of material compared to other books. However, you need to keep in mind that the practice tests in this book are easier than the ones on the actual TOEFL exam.

As such, this book is ideal for beginner and intermediate level students that need to get comfortable with the exam. But the actual exam is much more challenging, therefore you might want to purchase another book at a later stage.
