KallisDecember 30, 2016
If you need more support for the reading component of the exam, Kallis’ TOEFL Pattern series has a helpful series of books which covers the ten different types of questions students might expect to see on the exam.
Each type of question is given a complete chapter, and their system is renowned for its Hacking and Quick Look strategies.
If you need help in the reading area, Kallis’ books should definitely be on your list.
Kallis has three different levels, so it is recommended that you purchase Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3, and patiently proceed through the whole system.
Compass Tests (building, developing, mastering)December 30, 2016
Another series which can be considered for extra reading support is the Compass reading series.
Apart from the usual practice one might expect from this type of book, controlled note taking activities are also part of what is covered.
Just keep in mind that the audio CDs are sold separately.
The Compass reading skills books make a good addition to your TOEFL reading preparation if you did not find the support in the general preparation books sufficient.
The first book is labeled as Building Skills, the second Developing Skills and the final book is titled Mastering Skills.
Peterson’sDecember 30, 2016
If you do not fancy going through a more in-depth three-part series such as the Kallis and Compass series, Peterson’s Master TOEFL Reading Skills book might be what you’re looking for.
It provides students with plenty of tips to give them the advantage they need when doing the reading component of the exam.
Just don’t expect to be given the same level of in-depth preparation and practice as the Kallis and Compass series.
PraxisGroup International Language Academic SeriesDecember 30, 2016
The PraxisGroup’s reading section preparation book helps guide students to the ‘best answers’ which are to be found on the reading portion of the TOEFL exam.
Using the process of the elimination technique, you are taught to read less (but more efficiently) in order to discover the best answers on the test.
In short, this book trains you to find the clues in the text which will allow you to read less, understand more and earn a higher score in this section.
This book is a valuable addition to the excellent PraxisGroup International Language Academic Series.
Now if only someone could help them design a nicer book cover. But remember – never judge a book by its cover!
Princeton ReviewDecember 30, 2016
Another single book you might want to consider for use when preparing for the reading section is The Princeton Review’s TOEFL Reading & Writing Workout.
Although a very good resource, you just need to know before purchasing it that its 240 pages have been spread over two different components, being both reading and writing.
If you only want to concentrate on reading and prefer a single book format (over the Kallis and Compass three-part series format), then we recommend you stick to Peterson’s Master TOEFL Reading Skills book.
