The writing section of the TOEFL iBT test can be very difficult, even for advanced English speakers.

Spanning over 50 minutes, the section requires test takers to draft 2 essays.

One segment is an integrated writing task, while the other is an independent writing task. Both sections are graded on a scale of 0–5 by evaluators trained by the ETS to assess essays.

Based on academic subjects, the writing task is complex for many, since it focuses on the test-taker’s development and organization of grammatical structures as well as use of language and vocabulary.

Understanding the Writing Section of the TOEFL iBT

Starting with the Integrated Writing Task…

This section provides you with a written passage and a lecture on the same topic. Your task is to focus on specific information found in the content and present that information  in your written passage. Note-taking is a necessary skill here.

When listening to the lecture, note down factors the speaker emphasizes, and keep your mind focused on any example that may relate to it.

Next, create an outline that would present your opinion clearly. Make sure it flows logically from one point to another. Vague content with an unclear idea and goal will lead to a lower score.

Next, focus on the Independent Task….

The independent task tests your organization and ability for progression. The essay largely requires you to accomplish the following factors in your writing:

  • The essay should address the topic effectively and clearly
  • The essay should be well-organized and developed; it should use clear explanations and examples and provide details
  • The essay should display a sense of progression and coherence in sentences
  • The essay should also display an acute sense of syntactic variety (i.e. don’t keep repeating the same sentence structures), with focus on appropriate choice of words, with little to no grammatical errors.

Though this system is quite familiar to what you’ll have to do for the integrated writing task, the independent writing task requires you to be more fluent with your thoughts and ideas.

The concept should be clearly stated, but it should offer your opinion. Perhaps you agree or disagree with the topic at hand. You can take the opportunity to explain your view in your essay using appropriate counterarguments.

What to Do During the Test

– Take Focused Notes While Reading

If you’re practicing for your writing section with reliable practice notes, you’d already know the structure of the section in question. The reading part of the writing section summarizes the main argument, and is then followed by three paragraphs that summarizes a supporting point.

The lecture would follow a mirror structure. It begins with a paragraph that defines an opposing point, then includes three paragraphs that support that point.

When listening and reading the respective paragraphs, record the provided points and one detail to support it. Get the gist of what you need.

– Write about what You Read

For each point that is mentioned in the paragraphs, you need to write at least two sentences that would mention the points in detail.

– Refer to the Author

Phrases like the author claims or the professor states that are allowed. Use them to point out details if you want to be specific about the sources.

– Take Time to Proofread

You will have 20 minutes for the integrated writing task, and 30 minutes for the independent writing task. Use your time wisely and save at least two minutes for each essay so you can proofread your work.

Spelling mistakes and grammatical errors can be easy to make when you’re trying to race the clock. Give yourself time to read your work before you hand in your test.
